Our History
Learn more about the Sigma Chi International Fraternity and our history in Ottawa, the capital of Canada.
Sigma Chi International Fraternity
The Sigma Chi Fraternity was founded at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio on June 28th, 1855.
Having been members of another fraternity on campus and dissatisfied with undemocratic expectations, six of our seven founders left their former fraternity, and along with a seventh, these young men went on to create the Sigma Chi Fraternity. We were founded on the principle over merit over loyalty and are thus guided by three great aims: Friendship, Justice and Learning. Sigma Chi became an international fraternity with the installation of a chapter at the University of Toronto on April 22nd, 1922.

Sigma Chi has gone on to become one of the most prolific fraternities in the world. Having 230+ active undergraduate chapters, 120+ active alumni chapters, and 350,000+ lifetime brothers, the impact that Sigma Chi has had across the world is immeasurable!

Ottawa Alumni Chapter
Being the capital of Canada, brothers from all across North America not only visit, but move to Ottawa and the National Capital Region.
Brothers in the NCR began to steadily meet in September 2007, though without a local undergraduate chapter, it took time to locate our various Canadian and American brothers. In the spring of 2008, the Ottawa Alumni chapter was officially recognized by the Sigma Chi International Fraternity, and since then we have grown to have a large membership of brothers with diverse backgrounds: from private and public sector experience, military, sales and marketing, consulting, and various non-profit organizations as careers, what ties us together is the common bond that we are all Sigma Chi.

Our chapter has since gone on to play a large part in the founding and installation of the Lambda Theta undergraduate chapter at the University of Ottawa, and we have fostered a thriving relationship between active and alumni members of the fraternity through various social and charitable endeavours.
